Beyond Black History Month

New Art Exchange is reframing its Black History Month Season through a new public programme and research model: Beyond Black History Month.

New Art Exchange is reframing its Black History Month Season through a new public programme and research model: Beyond Black History Month. NAE would like to engage actively with local, national and global contemporary thought and attempt not just to stimulate but to catalyse new perspectives on the value of BHM within the UK. This programme will focus on bridging connections between the historical, contemporary socio-political, and ecological urgencies while collectively extending, reimagining and redefining the purpose of BHM and what it means to black communities, firstly in Nottingham and more broadly the UK and Europe.

The mission of Beyond Black History Month will initiate a long-term period of programming and research generated from collective thought and participation from NAE’s staff (including those outside of the creative team), audiences, black communities, schools, older and younger generations. The Beyond Black History Month project will also host activity around injustices surrounding Race, Gender, Sexuality, Class and Ecology. The programme strives to address systemic and institutional issues in connection with black historical figures and fluid notions of Blackness.
