Our Director of Programmes Mel chose ‘Everything Is Happening at Once’.

Rashid Rana’s exhibition, Everything Is Happening at Once, really sticks in my mind. Not only was it a great exhibition but it was my first show at New Art Exchange as Director of Programmes back in January 2012.

Rashid plays with the notion of the photographic image and photographic theory, working across 2D, sculpture and moving image to create works that often have a playful quality. Many works become an optical illusion and I really enjoyed seeing visitors respond to these. Working with Rashid on this show also introduced me to the Pakistani contemporary art scene for the first time.

I went on to do research in Lahore and Karachi, and through Rashid I met the fantastic Faiza Butt, one of his contemporaries from the National College of Art in Lahore. We went on to commission Paracosm a major touring retrospective of Faiza work in 2015 – one of NAE’s most popular exhibitions to date.

Find out more about the exhibition in our archive here.
