CATHARSIS: READINGS ON LOVE AND ECOLOGYGATHERING / WORKSHOPS

Michaela Yearwood-Dan’ takes us through her process of writing and the incorporated poems and song lyrics in her newly commissioned paintings featured in Laced.’ While Khaya Job (Femme Fatale Gals) will deliver a writing workshop that explores the contrast between pain and love, light and dark and the ups and downs of life ‘“ and how we move through them.

No experience in writing nor contemporary art necessary. This will be a safe space free from judgement and assumptions.

About the speakers:
Michaela Yearwood-Dan is a contemporary British artist based in London. Yearwood-Dan’s work often depicts a variety of topics based on observations of society and self. Her works tend to explore themes of class, culture/race, gender and nature and in later more current works love, loss and reflection all whilst remaining playful, personal and vibrant.

Working predominately with paint and collage, Yearwood-Dan’s art is habitually thick and sumptuous with references to both the origins of traditional Fine Art and pop culture; including images of late night food spots, overtly feminine stereotypes, botanical influences within personalised visual narrative. Her vibrant and luxurious style is underpinned by an expansive repertory of cultural signifiers, borrowing freely from millennial culture, blackness and feminism: texting, acrylic-nails, gold-hoops, carnival culture, and a lush, omnipresent flora which evokes seeding, propagation, growth and alludes to the intimate, infinite possibilities of a diaspora. Michaela Yearwood-Dan’s work is in continuous metamorphosis as it is highly expressive and dependent on her own identity, vision and philosophy of life, as a young British artist.

Khaya Job of Femme Fatale Gals is a young black creative who uses art as a way to navigate her way through the ups and downs of life, to self reflect, grow and make sense of her pain. She is the youngest trustee for Nottingham Unesco City of Literature and is a big advocate of personal empowerment. Through her Femme Fatale Gals magazines, she uses introspection and themes that make readers and contributors dive beneath the surface, creating conversations about things such as love, life, death, trauma and purpose.
