Fat Thursday on a Saturday
COMMUNITY CELEBRATION
26 February 2022, 2pm-4pm
Performance Space & Learning Room
Signpost to Polish Success invites you to once again to celebrate Fat Thursday, a day when Polish people across the world consume doughnuts before starting to fast for Lent. Join us to learn more about Polish culture and customs with arts and craft activities, and fun for all the family, not forgetting a free sample of traditional Pączki, jam-filled Polish doughnuts!
This year we're back in person and the activities are inspired by the equinox celebration known as the Drowning of Marzanna (Topienie Marzanny). Marzanna is the Polish incarnation of the old Slavic goddess of death, winter, and nature. To encourage the timely arrival of spring Slavs would make an effigy or doll out of straw, which was then wrapped in linen and beautified with ribbons and beads. This doll would be paraded on the streets, burned, and then drowned to scare away the spirit of winter and welcome spring.
Come along and create your own Marzanna puppet out of recyclable materials, for you to take home and recycle honouring nature and our environment, instead of downing or burning!
