FUTURE PERFECT? FILM OPEN

Inspired by the work of Larissa Sansour, Future Perfect? Film Festival explores the sci-fi genre, looking beyond distant galaxies and instead turning a critical eye much closer to home, exploring our future as a society. Reflecting on the theme of sci-fi, we showcase the work of talented UK filmmakers, offering them the opportunity to gain supportive critical reflection from a panel of industry experts, including artist Larissa Sansour, Stella Vision Productions founder and filmmaker Sophia Ramcharan and award winning director and filmmaker Raj Pathak.

Sophia Ramcharan:

Sophia Ramcharan is a graduate of Royal Holloway, University of London with an MA in Film & Television Production. She’s a 2013 graduate of FilmWorks, a Creative England initiative to fast-track up and coming production talent, during which she was mentored by Al Clark of Wellington Films (credits include the BAFTA-winning London to Brighton).

Sophia has produced various other short films, music promos, and corporate video work. including Happy New Year which was awarded the Pears Short Film Fund 2013; premiered at the UK Jewish Film Festival and screened internationally, Including The Geneva International Jewish Film Festival and San Diego International Jewish Film Festival.

Recognising a need to celebrate emerging and world cinema talent, Sophia has organised film screening exhibitions at Nottingham’s New Art Exchange Gallery and with the city’s Broadway Cinema and Media Centre, curating work for the annual Bang Short Films Festival there.

Selected for BAFTA CREW in the Production Management category in 2013, Sophia was also a BAFTA mentor for the BFI Film Academy Alumni programme. She is currently developing a horror feature film based on the award winning short film “The End”

Larissa Sansour

Born in Jerusalem, Sansour studied Fine Art in Copenhagen, London and New York. Her work is interdisciplinary, immersed in the current political dialogue and utilises video, photography, installation and sculpture.

Sansour’s work has featured in the biennials of Istanbul, Busan and Liverpool. She has exhibited at venues such as Tate Modern, London; Brooklyn Museum, NYC; Centre Pompidou, Paris; LOOP, Seoul; Queen Sofia Museum, Madrid; Louisiana Museum of Contemporary Art, Denmark; House of World Cultures, Berlin and MOCA, Hiroshima.

Recent solo shows include Lawrie Shabibi in Dubai, Anne de Villepoix in Paris, Photographic Center in Copenhagen, Montoro 12 in Rome, Sabrina Amrani in Madrid, Kulturhuset in Stockholm and DEPO in Istanbul.

Sansour is represented by Lawrie Shabibi in Dubai, Sabrina Amrani in Madrid and Montoro12 Contemporary Art in Rome. She lives and works in London.

 

Raj Pathak

Award Winning Director / Editor, Raj Pathak, originally from Nottingham UK began his Directing career at the young age of 16. His first feature penned at 14. He has written and produced and directed 50+ Music Videos, 10 short films, and 1 short-feature to-date, working along side an array of highly talented commercial and independent artists in the UK and LA.

Raj’s first taste of LA was working on the set of Dodgeball: The Movie as production assistant. He then went on to Co-write, Co-Produce and Direct his own self-financed short films ‘Le Boxeur’ and Directing ‘Konflooent’ (Cannes 2008, 1st LA Downtown festival 2008 and semi finalist in the Hayden Online Festival 2008) whilst also writing, directing a short feature funded by Capital One Bank ‘Piece By Piece’ to raise awareness of Gun, Drugs and Knifes crime in the UK. The film was released in the UK, November 2007.

Jump forward to 2015, he released his latest short film ‘The End’ which he Produced and Co-Directed. The cast and film went on to win multiple awards along with an array of nominations during its festival run in 2014. Raj is currently freelancing for production companies around the country on Corporate Videos and Commercial Promos. As well as continuing his transition in to feature films developing a handful of projects; including his first Thriller/Horror based on the award winning short film ‘The End’.

Nottingham born and bred, Joe Norman is a struggling artist – struggling with photography, video, writing, doodling and an unpronounceable foster cat. He thinks the future will have a high-surface-area feeling.

 

Richard III Rise and Fall by McGibney Productions (Jordan and Luke McGibney)

“I have gone through the BFI academy and NFTS Talent campus and at 18 completed Richard III a live action animation that won 17 awards.

My latest project I have just completed called Stereotype looks at knife crime, stereotyping, legacy and the power of choice. The British Urban Film Festival sponsored by Channel 4 has recently selected Stereotype.” — Jordan McGibney

 

Solstice by Antonietta Sacco

Antonietta Sacco’s work explores past imaginings of the future, space and time. Fascinated with Science Fiction, sub cultures and the dystopian her work deals with aspects of non-control and fictional realities.

 

MyMovie! by Rose Cleary

Rose Cleary is an artist living and working in London and Essex. Studied Fine Art at Central St. Martins College of Art, London. Has exhibited across the UK, and past commission clients include Doctor Marten’s.

 

LUKE by Robert Palmer

Robert Palmer have done a bit of everything in film, and this is his first short as Director. He has more experience behind the camera, but decided to put his everything into Directing this film and is damn proud of the result.

 

Conversational Thoughts by Beverley Sterling

Beverley is a multi-media artist (based in Nottingham) who produces short movies and animation. She has exhibited her work in the UK, Zimbabwe and Senegal.

“I develop a lot of my experimental ideas using ceramics, photography and text from my surroundings, living and working in Nottingham (UK) and in the past, Zimbabwe and Senegal. My short movies sometimes involve people participating and exploring their cultural identities, futuristic themes and this may involve a ceramic object or any item that has a particular significance which evokes a memory, a situation or experience(s)”

 

Gemini by Nick Archer

Nick Archer has written, directed and photographed dozens of short films including the award winning ‘Vice’ from 2011 and ‘Broken’ 2014, currently showing on NottsTV, over past fews years. This is as well as soon to be completed crowd-funded feature ‘Castle Boulevard’ and up coming TV project ‘Print’.

 

Marine Spirit Attack Reprise by Alia Pathan

Alia Pathan is an artist working with cinematic fiction films and video installation. Alia has exhibited nationally and internationally, including Independent Art Spaces Festival, Beijing,EM15 Sunscreen, 56th Venice Biennale, 4th Moscow International Biennale;LOOP Festival,Barcelona;Superdeluxe,Tokyo and Note On,Berlin.
