Handsworth Songs | 1986 | 1h 1min | U | UK | Dir. John Akomfrah

We are kicking off Black History Month with the screening of Handsworth Songs, a British documentary film directed by John Akomfrah and produced by the former Black Audio Film Collective in 1986. It was filmed during the 1985 riots that erupted in London and Birmingham's Handsworth district as an active response to police brutality.

The screening will be followed by a discussion with Trevor Mathison, a founding member of Black Audio Film Collective, the award winning production company responsible for Handsworth Songs. Trevor also worked on the sound design for the film, and is a long term collaborator of the film's director, John Akomfrah.
