POSTPONED: Reading Beyond: The Body Is Not an Apology READING AND DISCUSSION GROUP

1 Jan, 1970 at 12:00 am - 13 Jan, 2022 at 12:00 am

‘Reading Beyond’ is an informal reading group and forum part of the ongoing ‘Beyond Black History Month’ programme in collaboration with All Black Connect’s ‘Between The Lines Book Club’.

Join us for critical conversations where we will collectively discuss texts by black authors that speak to socio-political urgencies, historical, and ecological themes related to black life. The chosen writings will flow between local, national, and global contexts to catalyse new perspectives and expand on existing knowledge within the group.

For this session we are reading The Body Is Not an Apology: The Power of Radical Self-Love by Sonya Renee Taylor.

Humans are a varied and divergent bunch with all manner of beliefs, morals, and bodies. Systems of oppression thrive off our inability to make peace with difference and injure the relationship we have with our own bodies. The Body Is Not an Apology offers radical self-love as the balm to heal the wounds inflicted by these violent systems. World-renowned activist and poet Sonya Renee Taylor invites us to reconnect with the radical origins of our minds and bodies and celebrate our collective, enduring strength. As we awaken to our own indoctrinated body shame, we feel inspired to awaken others and to interrupt the systems that perpetuate body shame and oppression against all bodies. When we act from this truth on a global scale, we usher in the transformative opportunity of radical self-love, which is the opportunity for a more just, equitable, and compassionate world–for us all.

Sonya Renee Taylor is the Founder and Radical Executive Officer of The Body is Not An Apology, a digital media and education company promoting radical self-love and body empowerment as the foundational tool for social justice and global transformation. Sonya’s work as a highly sought-after award-winning Performance Poet, activist, and transformational leader continues to have global reach. Sonya is a former National and International poetry slam champion, author of two books, including The Body is Not an Apology: The Power of Radical Self-Love (Berrett-Koehler Feb 2018), educator and thought leader who has enlightened and inspired organizations, audiences and individuals from board rooms to prisons, universities to homeless shelters, elementary schools to some of the biggest stages in the world.
