WORD’S OUT: AMPLIFYING BLACK WOMEN’S VOICES

Word’s Out is a celebration of words showcasing and supporting Black female artists working in various word-based artforms ‘“ poets, writers, playwrights, singers, songwriters…

The evening is inspired by Phoebe Boswell’s piece Mutumia exhibited at NAE and aims to amplify Black women’s voices. Between each act there will be space for a dialogue with each performer led by Panya Banjoko, with questions around what it means to be Black, and to be a woman.

Join us for a relaxed evening at NAE’s CaféBar with live poetry and spoken word performances by artists from Nottingham Black Archive’s Black Writers & Artists Network, with a powerhouse line up including Sarah ‘Rain’ Kolawole, Abii, Bea Udeh, Donna Briscoe Greene, and Ioney Smallhorne.

Performers’ bios:

Panya Banjoko

Panya Banjoko is a UK based poet. Her debut collection, Some Things, was published by Burning Eye Books in 2018. Her poem ‘They and Them’ was featured in an exhibition by Keith Piper at the Beaconsfield Gallery, the London Film Festival and the International Film Festival, Rotterdam. Panya is also a patron for Nottingham UNESCO City of Literature.

Sarah ‘Rain’ Kolawole

Sarah ‘Rain’ Kolawole is a playwright and spoken word artist from Nottingham. She is currently an Associate Artist at Nottingham Playhouse theatre (2018-2021) and a member of the Soho theatre writer’s lab alumni group. Sarah is currently under commission with Derby Theatre for the ‘Home Girl’ book adaption and commission on the ‘Places in Between’ Project.

Bea Udeh

Bea is a published author, poet-educator and independent arts consultant living in Derby. Through BeaBop Productions, her leadership experience of working in the aero-engine, media, education, and arts sectors continually challenges systemic practices that marginalise voices. For over 20 years, Bea has used her writing praxis to address infrastructural discrimination and anti-Blackness.

Abii

Abii, a Nottingham based musician, performed her debut single at the Stade de France (2014). Other performances include Le Trac, Dot to Dot and film release La nuit je m’ennie. 2017 saw the release of Multicolores, a song penned by Abii for Lisandro Cuxi winner of The Voice, Kids (France).

Ioney Smallhorne

Ioney earned a MA in Creative Writing & Education, Goldsmiths University. Longlisted for the Jerwood Fellowship 2017, short listed by Caribbean Small-Axe prize 2016.Ioney is currently working on her first poetry anthology with Peepal Tree Press’s, included in the Dial-a-Poem free App available via Google Play or Apple’s App Store.

Donna Briscoe Greene

Donna Briscoe-Greene is the award winner of the 2019 Black Achievers Award for Culture, Media and the Arts. She recently became the Landlady of pub theatre The Maypole Cafe Bar and Theatre ‘“ the only Black woman in the UK to be running one, and proud to be spearheading this type of space in Derby. Through the company Donna founded EMBAA CIC (East Midlands Black Arts Associated) and works at supporting the decolonisation of the locally arts scene through consultancy, performance, and audience development, as well as training and mentoring.
Donna loves to sing and to perform in new spaces ensuring that African and Caribbean Arts and Culture continues to be explored, reframed, re-evaluated, and seen.
