HETAIN PATEL: AT HOME (PAST TOURING)
New Art Exchange is proud to present At Home, a major touring exhibition of existing and newly commissioned works by artist Hetain Patel. The exhibition premiered at Chatterjee & Lal, Mumbai, India, and New Art Exchange in 2012. At Home can next be seen at mac birmingham (Saturday 30 November 2013 until Sunday 26 January 2014) and the show is available for tour in 2014 and 2015.
At Home is Patel's first major solo exhibition of new work since 2007. This much anticipated collection marks an important turning point in the artist's practice. In a departure from previous self-portraiture works, Patel is no longer be the sole protagonist in the camera's frame, and in some cases, completely absent. In keeping with his recent practice, the work starts with culture specific questions relating to his own identity, which then open out into much wider questions around human relationships and the insatiable appetite we have to define ourselves.
At Home, reflects Patel's increasingly prevalent relationship to the domestic, both formally and conceptually. The video and photography works are nearly all shot in the home environment. These settings are not only places where Patel's domestic and studio lives blur, but they also highlight the subject matter in his work. He suggests the home as a place to locate and challenge notions of authenticity- the authentic self. The works in the exhibition offer multiple and interweaving answers to the question of where, how and by whom this self is constructed.
A number of new works including two multi-screen video installations, and a body of large-scale photographs have been commissioned for the exhibition.
