YARD Young People's Theatre
Schedule - Term Time Only:
Ages 8-11: Tuesdays 4pm - 6pm
Ages 12-16: Wednesdays 5pm - 7pm
YARD (Youth Arts Research and Development) is a creative hub for young people (up to 16 years old) to develop skills as performers and creative producers.
Are you interested in learning more about the theatre industry? About acting, writing scripts, developing characters and putting on performances? Come join our growing company of young actors! Led by experienced drama practitioner and theatre maker, Parmjit Sagoo, the sessions aim to build self-confidence and enable physical expression, as well as more specific theatre skills such as script-writing, voice work, characterisation and movement. Meet other young people with an exciting mix of talents and personailities, and learn to explore your passion for theatre and acting.
YARD happens twice a week during term time. Younger children, aged 8-11 years, can develop confidence, communication and creative skills through a range of enjoyable games, story-making and drama exercises. Those ages 12-16 years, will develop performance skills, explore different styles and genres of drama and learn about devising original theatre.
In our YARDies own words:
'YARD is a place where you can develop your acting skills, meet new people and friends and build your confidence. It's a place where you can put yourself out of your comfort zone and you can learn new things about yourself and what you're able to do. YARD also helps you learn new drama techniques e.g. writing and directing.
I started YARD a year ago and so far I have met a lot of new people who have helped me build up my performance skills and confidence. Before drama lessons (I take drama GCSE) I used to be shy and scared to perform in front of people but YARD has helped me learn to express myself better and be more confident.'
'I have been for 1 year in YARD now. I really enjoy it because I love drama and want to be an actress, so it has helped me. It has made me stand up for myself more as I have been bullied at school, so it has made me more confident.'
'YARD is a thing I look forward to after school and even though I live about 20mins away on the tram I don't mind as I enjoy the trip, knowing that I will have a guaranteed good time.'
'YARD is the kind of club I've always wanted to join – it means a lot to me. It wakes me up and makes me alert.I have learnt a lot about emotions and movement. I have enjoyed writing songs.'
