BLUES ON PLANET MARS: RACE, POLITICS AND SCIENCE FICTION

Omara Dyer-Johnson and Patrick Henderson, postgraduate researchers in American Studies at The University of Nottingham, explore how science fiction has been used to tackle issues of race. With a particular focus on the black contribution to the genre, it will look at how writers such as Samuel Delaney and Octavia Butler, musicians such as Sun Ra, George Clinton and Janelle Monae, and styles such as Afro- Futurism have reimagined human identity in order to challenge the history of racism and imagine possible futures beyond it.
