CHARLIE PHILLIPS: THE URBAN EYE
20 Apr, 2013 at 12:00 am - 7 Jul, 2013 at 12:00 am
Charlie Phillips photographs capture fleeting moments in time, space and memory that relate to people’s everyday experience of life in cities. For over 50 years Phillips has used the medium of photography to document, archive, explore and celebrate the rich diversity of characters, landscapes and emotions that form part of the migrant’s experience in the UK.
This exhibition, curated by Paul Goodwin, is this artist’s first solo exhibition outside of London. The exhibition assembles Charlie Phillips’ seminal London photographs documenting the social landscape of the Notting Hill neighbourhood in the 1960s and early 70s. These pictures illustrate a social and built environment very much shaped by West Indian migration to Britain since the late 1940s against the backdrop of rapid urban change and rebuilding.
Street life, interracial relationships, Carnival, fashion and images of bohemia were very much part of the constructed and contested mythology of Notting Hill.
Paul Goodwin and Charlie Phillips will lead a tour of the exhibition during the launch.
