6pm – 9pm

A complimentary drink and delicious canapes will be served on arrival. A live DJ will be playing all evening in the cafe-lounge bar.

7pm – 8pm

Yara El-Sherbini joins Manick Govinda, Artsadmin, for a stimulating conversation around her newly commissioned exhibition. Aya Haidar will also join the conversation.

Yara El-Sherbini’s playful interdisciplinary practice uses humour and popular culture references to question social and political systems of power and influence. At the heart of the exhibition will be the newly commissioned interactive artwork The Current Situation, a giant adaptation of a ‘buzz wire’ game subverted into the form of a world map. Visitors to the gallery will be invited to navigate around global borders with a hand held device, attempting to avoid activating an electric charge. Some territories are more difficult to navigate than others, examining notions around the establishment of borders, the division of land and expansion of empires.

El-Sherbini’s exhibition will be complimented by installations by Aya Haidar in the Mezzanine Gallery space. Haidar investigates the fundamental elements of language that contribute to a story, exploring global cultures, media and questions of identity, both national and personal. In Year of Issue Haidar uses books to probe into the nature of independence, self-governance, and freedom. The installation subtly reveals ironic, incisive and perhaps even humorous messages.

We look forward to welcoming you to these exciting exhibitions.

The exhibitions will continue until 7 September 2014
