NTU BA Photography Degree Show Showcase

26 May, 2018 at 12:00 am - 24 Jun, 2018 at 12:00 am

Each year New Art Exchange(NAE) comes together with Nottingham Trent University as a partner venue to exhibit selected artists from among the BA Photography final year group. Endeavouring to support creative practitioners as they near graduation and enter the wider professional arts arena, this year NAE presents the work of 3rd year students Celeste Camilleri, Rasha Kotaiche and Leah Wareham.

Celeste Camilleri’s Glass Ceilings explores colonialism and the lasting impacts of empire through intense, abstracted images of plants growing to fill vast Victorian greenhouses. Each plant pushes and bends against glass walls and wrought iron frames, selected for display in climes far colder than their origin and cut back when they become too large and unmanageable.

Leah Wareham’s work Saggar Maker’s Bottom Knocker is a celebration of the world-renowned heartland of the British pottery industry, Stoke-on-Trent. Although the area saw a steep industrial decline in the 1970s the industry has by no means disappeared. Wareham’s photographs depict the skill and pride of the talented individuals who keep this traditional industry alive, while reflecting on the new potters drawn to Stoke because of its prestigious history.

More Than You Know by Rasha Kotaiche presents the artist’s perception of her place in the world, through a collection of images taken in Lebanon and Kuwait. After spending time exploring her Lebanese heritage, Kotaiche has found her identity situated across both cultures. The artist is interested in exploring the challenges inherent to establishing a sense of self and the common need to identify with one culture or another, when the reality is often much more complex.
