A palimpsest is a parchment designed to be scraped clean and used again. The traces of previous texts and drawings often remain visible through the layers of mark-making, thus reflecting the history of the documents earlier forms. In this new collection of work, Nottingham based artist Gurminder Sikand uses the concept of the palimpsest to explore the shifting nature of culture, memory and identity.

Extending New Art Exchange’s seasonal interest in folk art, Gurminder’s works also explores Indian folklore, cultural symbols and Hindu mythology in an attempt to understand the creation of identity.
