Rachael Young & Richard Houguez: Crowns of Confidence

22 Nov, 2014 at 12:00 am - 11 Jan, 2015 at 12:00 am

This November, performance artist and qualified hairdresser Rachael Young and self-taught hairdresser Richard Houguez, will set up a hairstyling laboratory in NAE’s Barbershop & Salon Pop-Up Gallery as part of a project called Crowns of Confidence. During a number of sessions the artists will work with a group of participants use the process of hairstyling to explore the cultural significance of hair and the role persona plays in hairdressing. The traces and outcomes of these sessions will remain within the gallery as part of the exhibit until the 11th of January 2015.

Are you interested in hairstyling, the cultural significance of hair or participatory art practice? Then we need you!!!

We need 10 participants to take part in this project. The group will work with Young and Houguez to reflect on the significance of their current styling choices, with the artists helping the participants to imagine and create a hairstyle that represents their own ‘Crown of Confidence’. The sessions will be informal, creative, exploratory and fun! Complimentary refreshments will be provided.

Hairstyling Laboratory Weekends: Sat 8 & Sun 9 or Sat 15 & Sun 16 November (10:30am – 4:30pm).

Participants should be able to commit one weekend or the other (ideally both the Saturday and the Sunday). We are looking for participants who have an interest in hair and hair styling, but should ideally not be professional hairdressers. The sessions are suitable for participants aged 16+. If you are interested in getting involved, please email [email protected] with a brief description of your hair as you currently wear it.
