READING BEYOND: PITCH BLACK

1 Jan, 1970 at 12:00 am - 26 Aug, 2021 at 12:00 am

‘Reading Beyond’ is an informal reading group and forum part of the ongoing ‘Beyond Black History Month’ programme in collaboration with All Black Connect’s ‘Between The Lines Book Club’.

Join us for these critical conversations where we will collectively discuss texts by black authors that speak to socio-political urgencies, historical, and ecological themes related to black life. The chosen writings will flow between local, national, and global contexts to catalyse new perspectives and expand on existing knowledge within the group.

In this session, we’ll explore ‘Pitch Black’ by’ Emy Onuora.

Today, 30 per cent of English professional footballers are black, and amongst their number are some of the biggest heroes of the beautiful game. But just how far have we come?

In this fascinating new book, Onuora critically scrutinises the attitudes of FIFA, the FA and the media over the last half-century, and asks what is being done to combat the subtler forms of racism that undeniably persist even today. Featuring startling revelations from all levels of the footballing fraternity, Pitch Black takes a frank and controversial look at the history of the world’s most popular sport and its future.

We’ll be reading chapters 3 and 8, if you’d like printouts of the text, please email [email protected].
