RESIDE: PILGRIMAGE
22 Jul - 23 Sep

This season’s artist-in-residence is Sayra Begum. As part of her residency, she will explore pilgrimage from religious and secular perspectives, informing ideas for her next graphic novel. Her aim is to capture ideas from philosophers, society, and the embodied experience of the pilgrimage itself.
Sayra Begum is an illustrator, writer and educator based in Nottingham. Begum’s style is influenced by Islamic miniatures and Surrealism. She is interested in theology, our relationship to the environment and each other, and the reality beyond our perception. Begum released her debut graphic novel, Mongrel in 2020, which was exhibited as part of the NAE Open 22.
She was the winner of the NAE Open 2022 Residency Prize. This residency is part of Reside, a programme that invites artists and creative groups to reside in NAE to collaborate and connect with our wider community to generate inspiring ideas, develop new initiatives and nurture their practice.
