SOFIA YALA: PLAYING WITH FRAGMENTS

1 Jan, 1970 at 12:00 am - 4 Jun, 2021 at 12:00 am

Join artist Sofia Yala for a photo walk and experimental photomontage workshop that taps into your imagination and tests your gaze.

The first day of this workshop will be in-person and the second day will be an online workshop via Zoom.

On Thursday, we will use our cameras to do a photo walk on Gregory Boulevard and Forest Recreation Ground. What can you learn from our immediate environment? Why is archiving crucial in understanding the present and potential futures?

Continuing on Friday, we will explore montage as the process of assembling fragments. Influenced by anti-colonial sentiment and African filmmakers such as Sarah Maldoror, Sembene Ousmane or Djibril Diop Mambety, Playing With Fragments will draw on the influence of 70s and 80s cinema and non-western narratives. The session will explore themes of cultural memory, family archives, and memory of place to create your own montage that explores the power of images in educating and telling stories.

Please ensure that as a parent/career you have read NAE’s guidelines for online sessions here.

Thursday 3 June, 10.30am-1pm & Friday 4 June, 10.30am-12pm. Ages 11-16.

Free | Booking Required | Limited Capacity
