Syria’s Disappeared: The Case Against Assad (2017)

‘It was my duty to get the names out’ (Mansour al Omari, former detainee)

This documentary tells the hidden story of tens of thousands of men, women and children disappeared by the Syrian regime of President Assad into a network of clandestine detention centres. Followed by a panel with special guests to discuss the inspirational fight for justice for Syria’s detainees. Presented in association with Syria Solidarity UK.

Chair:
Flora Bain is an activist and campaigns on human rights and refugee issues. She is a volunteer with Syria Solidarity UK, a network of activists committed to solidarity with the Syrian Revolution€¨. In her professional life she is Communications Manager for The Mosaic Rooms, London’s free space for contemporary culture from and about the Arab world.

Panel:
Hani Almidani is a Syrian architect and urban practitioner. He holds a master degree from UCL where he researched the topic of governance and reconstruction in Syria. He is also a Syrian activist who was formally detained because of his participation in the early days of the peaceful uprising in 2011 and 2012 before having to flee.

Lena Baurak is a British Syrian who has lived in Nottingham for over 20 years. She is an active member of the Syrian community, has organised social and fund raising events, raised awareness about the Syrian conflict and the plight of the Syrian people.  Lena volunteered to help Syrian refugees when they first arrived to Nottingham. She is a keen advocate on social justice and women’s right issues.

Lydia Davies-Bright is a law lecturer at Nottingham Law School, NTU. Her research and publications challenge what have become ‘common sense’ arguments relating to the dichotomy between human rights and security, primarily within the context of counter-terrorism.
