New Art Exchange is commissioning The Current Situation, an ambitious body of playful works by visual artist Yara El-Sherbini which will continue her exploration into assumed and produced knowledge; how we know things, how we learnt them and how this informs our world view. The exhibition, which contains both on-site and off-site interventions, intends to playfully engage audience in a number of different ways. The show will launch at NAE in May 2014 and we are currently seeking two further UK galleries to partner with NAE to host and co-commission the works and publication.

Yara’s playful interdisciplinary practice uses humour to engage audiences in questioning social and political systems of power and influence. The broader scope of her practice includes installations, interventions, live art and video. She appropriates familiar objects and social events, which are universally recognisable within specific cultural contexts (games, souvenirs, auctions, PA systems), to invite audiences to take a look at the society that they live in, drawing attention to the idiosyncrasies of popular culture, often revealing the underlying belief systems, which condition and determine them. Familiar frameworks provide accessible and playful environments, which explore the invisible processes of social influence and knowledge production used to shape individuals beliefs and behaviour in society at large.

Yara El-Sherbini received her MA from the Slade, UCL. Recent Artist in Residence’s include the Hayward Gallery as part of Wide Open School, in 2012, and at ZKM, Germany as part of The Global Contemporary in 2011. She has been part of group shows at Modern Art Oxford and The David Roberts Art Foundation (London) and Lombard-Fried Projects, New York. Her work has been shown at the V&A (London), Arnolfini (Bristol), National Portrait Gallery (London), IKON gallery (Birmingham), CCCB Museum (Barcelona), Art Dubai (Dubai), Centre d’Art Contemporain (Geneva) and Palazzo Papesse (Siena). Yara El-Sherbini is represented by La Caja Blanca Gallery, Spain.
