This week, in the lead up to International Women’s Day on 8 March, we’re spotlighting the work of two community projects which provide creative and supportive opportunities for women.

Women’s mental health and wellbeing have been significantly affected during this last year. Many women have been juggling the pressures of working, home schooling, an taking on more responsibility for family members that may require care.

The need for women only spaces is more vital than ever. These spaces are a respite from everyday pressures, away from societal expectations. Women can simply be themselves within a welcoming and safe environment. These projects create a sense of community, encouraging women to connect with one another, feel empowered, share and speak honestly, be supported and feel heard, and to know that they are not alone.

When Women Gather

Founded by Janet Rose and Jude Winwood, When Women Gather provides community arts and wellbeing interventions for women, to improve social inclusion and mental health, Through a regular programme of events and workshops, they hope to tackle the growing epidemic of loneliness and declining mental health. This support is holistic and creative, using music, dance, drama and art to provide opportunities for all women to connect meaningfully with each other, and to explore self-expression through the arts. They also provide bespoke education and training programmes to support women with mental and emotional health, looking at themes such as self-care and raising self-esteem.

Currently, they are running a ‘Voices of Identity‘ project, which offers a vibrant programme of drama, frame drumming, art journaling, belly-dancing and samba dancing workshops, alongside talks exploring topics such as anxiety, healthy eating and depression.

These are happening throughout February, March and April. All events are free to take part in, and you can find out more about their work – visit their website here or their Facebook page here.
