Artist Spotlight: Shezad Dawood

Shezad Dawood is someone with whom you might start by talking about invisible histories of the Non-Aligned Movement during the Cold War era…

Supporting diversity in artistic practice is just as important to us during this time of uncertainty. Our Artist Spotlight series aims to highlight artists our team find inspirational.

Shezad Dawood by Ritika Biswas

Shezad Dawood is someone with whom you might start by talking about invisible histories of the Non-Aligned Movement during the Cold War era and end up in a strange conversational plane of ancient Vedic philosophy, underground bars in police states, and ghosts.

Working on and experiencing his exhibition Encroachments earlier this year, was a similar experience— one that virtually pulls you out of your body and transplants you onto alien soil that nurtures his visceral and complex visions of alternative dimensions, teleologies, and speculative worlds. In a society obsessed with dichotomies and opposition, minds and works such as his gently nudge us into imagining and thus striving for a more open and empathetic universe.
