FAIZA BUTT: PARACOSM (PAST TOURING)

24 Apr, 2015 at 12:00 am - 28 Jun, 2015 at 12:00 am

A photograph of Faiza Butt's art piece called Paracosm, featuring a man with a beard with colours overlayed on his face and butterflies around his head.

New Art Exchange (NAE) is proud to present Paracosm the first major survey of Faiza Butt’s work in a British public gallery. The exhibition explores her practice over two decades and comprises of a rich collection ranging from drawings and paintings to digital prints, light works and sculptural installation.

A paracosm is a detailed imaginary world created inside one’s mind. Saturated with her artwork, our galleries will become a projection of Butt’s paracosm, the artist’s commentary on the world in which we live. Visitors are invited to journey through this vision, to question what is fantastical and what is real, and to consider the potent power of the image in influencing popular opinion. Her artworks are based on pictures scavenged from the media and advertising. In a bid to connect with the widest audience, and in response to the snobbery towards beauty in contemporary art, Butt deploys candy-shop colours and familiar forms to capture the spectator’s interest before connecting them with globally important questions. The exhibition premiered at NAE 23 April – 28 June 2015, and is available to tour to venues in England from July 2015.
