Culture Unwrapped: Being Brown

Skinder Hundal, CEO of New Art Exchange, will’ moderate a discussion about BBC Radio 4’s’ controversial broadcast of Enoch Powell’s infamous’ 1968 “rivers of blood” speech. It was broadcast in full’ for the first time on 14 April 2018 to mark the 50th’ anniversary of the far-right politician’s controversial’ address which flared hatred against immigrant arrivals.

The broadcast took place at a sensitive time as the government introduces integration strategies across’ urban centres in the UK. Panellists will include:

Dawinder Bansal is an award-winning theatre producer passionate about telling hidden stories to amaze, entertain, inspire and provoke audiences. Her most recent artist commission was for the National Festival of Making called ‘The Making of a South Asian Wedding’

Tasawar Bashir is an architect and visual’ contemporary sound artist. Tas is an AHRC scholar’ at the Brammel School of Music, University of’ Birmingham and Artist in Resident at NAE.

Sunil Shah is an artist and curator based in Oxford,’ UK. He is interested in the politics of photographic’ representation and conceptual post-documentary’ practices with relation to history, memory and identity.

Baptist Coelho is a visual artist based in Mumbai, India. Multi-layered aspects of people and places form the foundation of Baptist’s practice that extend beyond the studio. His focus has been to articulate unspoken stories and to conjure meaning from psychological and physical disruptions caused by war and conflict.

Manmit Jandu Singh a non resident Indian was brought up in Handsworth Birmingham and has recently settled in Mumbai to seek a new life. He is an architect in training and now exploring cinematography.
