RESIDUAL: TRACES OF THE BLACK BODY (PAST TOURING)

13 Mar, 2015 at 12:00 am - 17 Apr, 2015 at 12:00 am

New Art Exchange is proud to present Residual: Traces of the Black Body. Exhibited as part of FORMAT International Photography Festival 2015’s, the selection of work responds to the festival theme of ‘evidence’.

Curated by guest curator Christine Eyene, Residual refers to the idea of what remains after the main visual or tangible part of something has been removed or has disappeared. The exhibition comprises of 24 pieces, including a film, a sound piece, a series of seven lightboxes and both framed and foamex-mounted images.

Presenting the work of Larry Achiampong, Cristiano Berti, George Hallett, Ingrid Pollard and Zanele Muholi, Eyene explores the process of imaging and imagining the black presence in history and current society, through notions such as erasure, memory and metaphor. As curator, her focus is more precisely on traces and stories around the black body, through the multidisciplinary approaches of a cross-generational and cross-cultural group of five international visual artists and photographers. Presenting a diverse take on the medium of photography, Eyene seeks to examine the relationships explored by the artists between individuals and their surroundings, both urban and rural, focusing on the narratives they have lived and the traces of this existence often left behind. A global exploration of experience is depicted as the artists draw upon their locales.
